Gifts from Retirement Plans During Life

Gifts from Retirement Plans During Life Diagram

How It Works

  1. Donor takes a distribution from qualified retirement plan or IRA that is includable in gross income
  2. Donor makes a gift of the distribution or of other assets equal in value to the distribution to UJA-Federation
  3. Donor receives an offsetting charitable deduction
  4. If donor is 70½ or older, read ahead about the IRA rollover opportunity available

  • Donor may draw on perhaps donor's largest source of assets, with no adverse tax consequences, to support UJA-Federation
  • The distribution offsets minimum required distribution
  • If donor uses appreciated securities instead of cash from distribution to make gift, donor will avoid the capital-gain tax on the appreciation
